Yoga is about making the system energy efficient, allowing life to function with greater ease and balance. Yogic traditions offer simple ways to incubate and stabilise the energies, beginning with practices like neem consumption, a natural support known for its cleansing and balancing properties and long used in yogic sadhana. When combined with the right yogic practices, these methods help refine the body, mind, and energy, creating a strong foundation for wellbeing.
Neem – A Supportive Aid for Internal Cleansing
Neem has long been valued in yogic and traditional wellness systems for its cleansing and balancing properties. When used mindfully and in moderation, neem supports the body’s natural ability to maintain internal hygiene, conserve energy, and function efficiently.
Key benefits of neem consumption include:
Rich in antioxidants that support cellular health
Traditionally studied for its role in regulating inflammatory responses
Assists the body in conserving energy otherwise spent on internal imbalances
Known to generate internal heat, which is considered supportive for energising the system
Neem juice may help revitalise digestion and support metabolic efficiency
Bitter compounds are traditionally associated with aiding fat metabolism
Moderation is essential, especially with neem juice

Beyond internal use, neem is widely used externally and in daily-care practices to support hygiene, skin health, and overall balance. Different parts of the neem tree are used in specific ways, each offering distinct benefits.
Traditional uses of neem include:
Neem seed juice used to help address intestinal parasites
Neem bark traditionally used for oral hygiene and reducing dental plaque
Neem oil applied to the scalp to manage dandruff and support scalp health
Neem leaves used for skin care and managing common skin concerns
Neem flowers described in Ayurveda as cooling and often included in summer diets
Helps the system adjust to seasonal shifts, especially when incorporated mindfully and in a timely manner through a simple cuisine.
Important Note
Neem should not be consumed during pregnancy
Internal consumption should always be moderate and guided
Your body is formed by the five elements. Earth, water, fire, air, and space. Nearly 72% of the body is water, about 12% is earth, 6% air, 4% fire, and 6% space (akash). The yogic practice of Bhuta Shuddhi is designed to purify and balance these elements, supporting harmony within the system.
Preparing the System for Bhuta Shuddhi
Natural ways to bring elemental balance into everyday life
Water: The Foundation of the Human System
Water constitutes nearly 72% of the human body, making it the most dominant element within us. Because of this, the quality, handling, and receptivity of water directly influence our physical, mental, and energetic wellbeing. How water is sourced, transported, and consumed matters far more than we usually realize.
Ways to Treat Water for Vital Health
Collect tap water in a clean, dedicated vessel and let it naturally settle before drinking
Store overnight in clean metal/earthen vessels marked with vibhuti or kumkum, offer gratitude prayer, never drink straight from tap
Give it time to recover, drink consciously, and respect its vital role in your health and energy
Eat with Gratitude: Transform Food into Life Force
Earth element constitutes nearly 12% of the human body. So food is sacred life energy from other beings who sacrifice for our sustenance, how it reaches you, whose hands prepare it, and your approach to eating profoundly impacts how it transforms within.
Sacred Eating Principles
Consider how food travels to you and whose hands prepare it
Eating with deep thanks changes food’s effect in your body
Recognize other forms give their life to sustain yours
Your mindset while eating determines its inner alchemy

Breathe Nature’s Air
Of the 6% air we directly control, your breath is just 1%, yet how you hold and nurture it determines your vitality. City pollution limits air quality, so seek nature’s embrace for true renewal.
Essential Air & Nature Practices
Focus on conscious breathing
Walk in parks or lakesides to access cleaner air
Take children monthly to rivers, hills, even rocks, for climbing/swimming
Nature contact rejuvenates body, mind, and spirit connection
Master Your Inner Fire
Fire constitutes nearly 4% of the human body. Sunlight remains nature’s pure element, absorb it daily while cultivating the right inner fire, for what burns within (greed, hatred, love, or compassion) determines your physical and mental wellbeing.
Fire & Sunlight Essentials
Get pure sun exposure on your body every day
Choose between greed, hatred, anger, love, or compassion
Your inner fire dictates health outcomes
Right fire eliminates physical/mental health worries
Cleanse Your Akash
Akash constitutes nearly 6% of the human body, the subtle space between creation and its source, and it is the first part of you that meets everything you touch or are exposed to. When it gathers impurities, a simple fire-based cleansing can rekindle and reconnect the fire within to the fire outside, leaving your system refreshed and more receptive.
Simple Cleansing Practice
Use fire as a powerful way to cleanse internal impurities
At home, light a small fire using only organic material like straw or firewood (no oils or chemicals)
Stand facing the fire with open eyes and open palms turned toward it for about three minutes
Then turn around and stand with your back to the fire, exposing your spine for another three minutes
This reconnects your inner fire with the outer fire, creating a sense of resurgence and subtle cleansing in the system
These are simple preparatory steps, though not the ultimate processes, to prepare the system for Bhuta Shuddhi and to discover natural ways of bringing elemental balance into everyday life. The Bhuta Shuddhi processes designed by Sadhguru, as part of the 5-step Inner Cleansing program below, offer a unique opportunity for anyone to benefit from this otherwise esoteric yogic science, which traditionally requires intense sadhana.
